Different trees obviously grow at different rates. The amount of carbon sequestered in trees varies greatly. Cities generally have a list of "approved" trees for planting in town. Choosing trees that use less water, that provide good amounts of shade, and other criteria is an important step. iTree (Windows only) is a tool that calculates carbon sequestration and shading, and has a suite of accessory tools.
