There is a point beyond which additional material possessions no longer result in lasting happiness. We need to recognize this idea widely.

Okay...I love the idea in concept. But how do you incentivize people away from habits that are counter to this?

European cultures like ours rightly celebrate ourselves for our industrial superiority but we very wrongly assume that this is the be all and end all of earthly existence. To the great detriment of all life on earth, we have failed to recognize the moral and spiritual superiority of other cultures. Native America has 2 points that I would like to talk about here. The first is that all life on earth is equal. There are no inferior or superior species. Since we can't eat or make clothing or build shelter or do very much of anything here on earth without killing other creatures, it is sinful to take more from the environment than we need for a reasonable degree of physical and economic security. By economic I mean having something set aside for old age and infirmity. Also, generosity is the highest human virtue. While I'm not saying that those among us who are more productive through hard work or exceptional skill or even dumb luck should not live lives of relative privilege, I am saying that billionaires in mansions should be shamed rather than celebrated. This is a destructive practice in every way. Enough is enough. Too much is shameful. That should be our culture.
